In the middle of December, one Saturday afternoon, David went out to pick up milk and eggs at the corner store and came back with a kitten — a little ugly black and white kitten covered in gasoline.

There wasn’t much to do other than give it a bath, feed it, and try to find it a home. So posters were made and posted around town. Facebook pleas were posted.  And we waited, trying not to get too attached.

Surprisingly Zamfira and the little one (who remained nameless) starting playing with each other in the first 24 hours.  It was lovely and our apartment was full of action.  It’s hard not to fall in love with a kitten.  A week or so went by and while kids at school were interested in taking her home, none of their parents gave them permission to actually have her. David and I thought that we were going to end up keeping her because no one wanted her and we couldn’t throw her out in the cold.

The last day of classes, David heard that a student’s father was coming to see him about the kitten. When the family showed up David “interviewed” the family a bit — the kitten would be an indoor cat, have a flea collar, have two other cats to play with, and would get de-wormed and such (which we had already started).  It was a good fit.  David rang me and we all met at our apartment to give the kitten to the family. It was a bittersweet moment — the kitten was scared, I was emotional and teary, but the little kids were joyous to see their kitten.  It was tough to let go but good for all of us.

So David returned to school this Monday and saw one of the three kids from the family.  David asked about the kitten to find out that everything was going well.  The kitten’s happy; the kids and other cats are happy with her. David asked “What name did you give her?” The boy responded, “Veronica.”
